Shortage of Maltesers and other Mars chocolates after breakdown

Shoppers are finding empty shelves when they try to buy Mars chocolates at shops across the UK after a mechanical breakdown at a factory in Slough.

Mars says it is working hard to get the line back up and running and has apologised for the shortage.

Chocolate fans may be having trouble finding Maltesers, Revels and some Galaxy treats – Minstrels, Counters, Galaxy Milk and Ripple.

Mars says no other brands or products are affected and are being supplied as normal.

A Mars spokesman said: “We’re sorry some people aren’t able to find their favourite chocolates at the moment.

"We’ve had a mechanical breakdown which means that we aren’t able to make as many treats as we would like.”

She added that engineers in the Slough factory are working around the clock to ensure that the company is back up to full capacity as soon as possible.

James Dillinger, from Leeds, told The Sun : “What’s happened to Galaxy Ripples? I haven’t been able to find them anywhere for a month.

“People are worried about coronavirus, but this is the real crisis. My favourite bar to cheer me and the wife up.”

Matt Cottrell from Cambridgeshire added: “Every time I go into the shops, the date of delivery keeps changing
