Short term closure planned for Stack Newcastle

Stack in Newcastle will be temporarily closed next week to accommodate nearby demolition work.

The vibrant hub will be shut for four days to allow for a neighbouring building, Commercial Union House, to be demolished as part of the Pilgrim Place redevelopment works.

Pilgrim’s Quarter, a 678,000sqft office block, is set to become the new home for HM Revenue and Customs in the Northeast, accommodating approximately 9,000 staff.

Stack Newcastle will be closed from Sunday 20 February until 4pm on Thursday 24 February.

For the two weeks after, while work continues to take place, it will operate on reduced weekday hours opening from 4pm.

The venue will operate as usual on weekends opening from 10am until late.

“In order for the neighbouring building to be demolished safely we need to adapt the site to accommodate their machinery and equipment.” Said Neill Winch, CEO of Danieli Group, owners of Stack Newcastle.

“This does mean we have to close the site to remove some of the containers nearest to Commercial Union House.

"We anticipate the disruption to last no more than two weeks and if we can get back to our normal operating times sooner than planned, we will.”

The units from Hatch76 and down to Commercial Union House will be removed from site and all the units above from Thai-li-cious to Acropolis will also go.

The entrance from Pilgrim Street will remain and the upstairs area where the containers have been removed will be adapted and decked to create more seating.

Neill said, “Although this is not ideal, we need to work with the landlord so that they can carry out the necessary work around us. The plaza area will be slightly affected but we should only lose the space the Tipi currently occupies.”

“I am confident it won’t have too much impact and we can continue to operate as usual once we have adapted the site and still give customers the Stack experience they have become used to.”

Most of the food businesses affected will be relocated within the venue including Acropolis, Hatch 76 and Redhead’s Mac and Cheese.

Alex Hindson owner of Hatch 76 said, “We have been with STACK from the start and although we will no longer be operating form our container, we look forward to providing STACK customers with our full menu from our trailer which is where it all started from.”

“There will be a short period of pain while the change happens, but we understand the important work that is going on around us to transform the area for the future.”

Regular updates regarding the opening and closing times and any disruption will be shared on their social media pages.

The next-door development, which includes a nine-storey building as well as retail and leisure facilities, is expected to open in 2027.
