Short film released as Christmas lights officially switched on in Nottingham

Nottingham City Council has released a short film of its Christmas lights being switched on in the absence of the usual event in Old Market Square.

The Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Rosemary Healy, pressed down the switch as the 4,000 lights on Market Square's Christmas tree were lit up along with other decorations.

The lights being switched on took place this week and coincides with the opening on non-essential retail across the UK as the national lockdown ended on December 2.

Decorations have been set up in in the city centre as part of Nottingham's Christmas Market which opens on Saturday, December 5.

Councillor Rosemary Healy said: "The restrictions, challenges we've all faced, and the need to do things differently this year have made Christmas even more important for people.

"We have worked hard with our partners, such as Nottingham BID, to make sure we can help our citizens and visitors to the city enjoy Christmas safely and to support our retailers in encouraging visitors to return to the shops.

"We're working with retailers and public transport providers to stay open later to prevent overcrowding and to keep visitors safe on their way in and out of the city centre."

Preparations for stalls, rides and decorations are also ongoing in Market Square ahead of the Christmas Market opening to visitors this weekend.
