Short Film City Opening Night, Monday 8 November, 7.30pm, Leeds Town Hall
Short Film City 2010 officially opens with an unmissable selection of some of the most entertaining new shorts showing this year including brilliant comedy gems and fascinating delights. Plus fascinating, historic and often irreverent British Pathe news clips that reveal sides of Leeds that you've never seen before. Clips will include amazing footage of the city centre from 1926, the Golden Acre Park steam train in 1935, a giant parade for the famous Leeds Children's Day, flight simulation at home after a nice cup of tea, and a shopper from the moon!
World Animation Awards Parts I and II
Tuesday 9 November, 6.30pm and Thursday 11 November, 6pm, Leeds Town Hall
One of the favourite events in the Film Festival, the World Animation Competition now takes place in the spectacular setting of Leeds Town Hall. This year's competition is in two parts – there is so much amazing animation to share – and you can see both a double bill price of £10 / £8. Part one includes The Boy Who Wanted to be a Lion, a delightful ochre-coloured animation from the UK in which a reclusive little boy retreats even further from the world after a trip to the zoo. Another highlight is the ectoplasmic Ci sono gli spiriti, a half-remembered dream of nocturnal walks around empty rooms where the spirits converge.
Yorkshire Short Film Competition and Short Film City Finale
Saturday 13th November, 4pm, Hyde Park Picture House
True to form this year's offering is proof positive that our region's film output is, like the wonderful Yorkshire Mixture sweet bags of old, as vibrant and varied as it gets! This year's selection includes a dark and inventive adaptation of William S Burroughs' poem, Mr Bradley Mr Martin Hear Us Through the Hole in Thin Air, we also have an intricately animated Lone Wolf music video 15 Letters and, for complete contrast, Like Joe, Loathe Joe, a beautifully sensitive portrayal of a family that is falling apart. See the Yorkshire Short Film Competition and Best of British as a double bill for £10 / £8.
