From the runways to the streets, this year saw the revival of culottes in a big way. From international celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Rihanna, to Indian actors like Jacqueline Fernandez and Sonam Kapoor, these ‘not-quite pants, not-quite shorts’ are the season’s official must-have lowers. However, while culottes are clearly more popular among women, they can be a chic option for men as well, or so believe a few designers. Here are some varieties for men.
Vintage Vibe
Go back in time with these box-pleated grey culottes by Mexican designer Malafacha. The retro vibe of the outfit is classic, yet it has a few contemporary elements. Wear it with a blazer of the same colour or shake things up by going in for a solid contrasting shade.
Cover up
These crisp tailored short trousers have been paired by Issey Miyake with quilted leggings to give a layered look. If you wish to make it simple, get rid of the leggings, and sport the culottes with a casual shirt instead.
Suit up
Add some fun to the serious suited look, and still look dapper, by replacing those trousers with a pair of culottes. This Alexander McQueen ensemble combines the fluidity of these pleated, cropped lowers with the smartness of a well-fitted blazer.
Picture perfect
Mixing two of the biggest trends of this season — overall prints and culottes — is definitely a great idea, and a recent Alexander McQueen show was proof of that. For a casual chic look, one can opt for culottes with prints, and pair them with tie-up shoes.
Second skin
With this ensemble, Beijing-based designer Sean Suen showcases what a sartorial experiment looks like. With nippy weather around the corner, opting for a pair of leather culottes, or if you don’t feel very cold, then faux leather might just be a smart idea.
