Shops taped off by police as bricks fall from 'dangerous' chimney

A row of shops has been cordoned off by police after bricks fell from a chimney on the street.

At 5.50am today (July 24), police and fire crews were called to Chester Road in Ellesmere Port, to reports of a dangerous structure.

On arrival they found that a number of bricks had fallen from a chimney stack.

The police cordon is in place around a block of shops on Whitby Road, up to the junction of Vale Road in the town.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue are currently waiting for the arrival of an engineer who has been sent out to assess the situation.

Photos from the scene show the chimney above the locksmiths in a state of semi-collapse.

Both motorists and pedestrians are being turned away from the site.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Police said: "At 5.50am on Friday 24 July officers were called to reports of a dangerous structure on Chester Road, Ellesmere Port.

"Police and fire attended the scene and found that a number of bricks had fallen from a chimney stack.

"A small cordon has been put in place as a precautionary measure and the site has been passed to Cheshire Fire and Rescue service for assessment."
