Shops evacuated as fire crews and paramedics rush to incident in Leeds

Several businesses in north Leeds were forced to evacuate this morning following a suspected gas leak.

Fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene of an incident on Station Road, Horsforth, at around 8am and a cordon was put in place.

An eyewitness from Sliced, a sandwich shop on Station Road, has told LeedsLive that there was a suspected gas leak from a Tesco delivery truck.

Emergency services attended the scene and the street was cordoned off as people in a number of shops on Station Road were evacuated.

Amber Beanland, who works at Sliced, said: "The Tesco delivery lorry’s refrigerator gas leaked, so they closed it all off and to check that everyone was okay.

"It started this morning about 8am when the driver was unloading the lorry and he got a whiff of the gas. He reported it to the Tesco staff who called the emergency services.

"The driver was receiving treatment from the ambulance service but he didn't need to go to the hospital it wasn't that serious.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service has since confirmed that a crew was dispatched to the scene after an ammonia alarm was triggered.

In a statement, they said: "We got called at 7.35am to reports of an ammonia alarm on Station Road.

"One crew from Cookridge attended the scene and requested an engineer who deemed the scene safe."

Amber said: "There was lots of police, fire engines and lots of cordons. Businesses had to close but we were told we could go ahead."

LeedsLive understands that some businesses were allowed to reopen again by 10am, although Tesco did not open until later.
