Shops, businesses and homes hoped to replace old Pilkington glass factory at entrance to Swansea

A commercial, retail and residential scheme could rise from a former glass factory near the centre of Swansea, but not quite yet.

Investment company Swansea.com is keen to make the best use of the Pilkington Glass site, near the junction of Quay Parade and Bath Lane.

First it needs to bring down the dilapidated industrial building, and a demolition application for this has been submitted to Swansea Council.

Jacob Hughes, group managing director of Swansea.com, said the company hoped to demolish it in the next couple of months.

The proposed mixed-use scheme would then take a while to draw up before being considered by the planning authority.

Mr Hughes said it could be two years before the site was developed, and that he was heartened by the council-led investment happening in Swansea.

"We are massively encouraged by the regeneration of the city," he said.

Three years ago the plan for the Pilkington building was to re-clad it and create a scaffolder training centre inside.

It has been used over the years for temporary parking.

A construction traffic management plan has been lodged with the demolition application. It said owners of all neighbouring properties would be written to up to four weeks in advance of works with details of the programme and any short-term obstructions in Bath Lane.

The council, meanwhile, is leading the development of the new indoor arena and last month appointed an un-named partner to push ahead with new homes, commercial and leisure schemes on seven plots of land across the city.
