Shops across Bristol have 'sold out' of hand gel amid coronavirus fears

Concerns about the threat of coronavirus is putting pressure on stocks of hand washing products in Bristol.

On Saturday, February 29, a case of coronavirus was confirmed in nearby Gloucestershire. The patient is a Cotswolds resident and had travelled to northern Italy.

The total number of UK cases has now risen to 23, prompting many to take additional precautions.

People have been seen at Bristol Temple Meads wearing masks and multiple supermarkets across Bristol appear to have sold out of hand sanitising products.

The Tesco store in Brislington is one store which had empty shelves where hand sanitiser should have been on Saturday, but it told Bristol Live it is restocking today (Sunday, March 1).

Boots limit to two bottles per customer

Boots in Queens Road, Clifton, had also run out on Saturday.

A Boots spokesperson said its stores have daily deliveries of the product, but confirmed they are limiting hand sanitiser to two per customer in light of demand.

She said: "We are also reiterating advice about how to stay healthy, by washing hands and not touching your nose, eyes and mouth after sneezing."

There has also been unconfirmed reports Marks and Spencer in Clifton has also sold all of its cleaning gels.

A shopper, who wished not to be named, told Bristol Live: "Whiteladies Rd M&S Simply Food manager says somebody bought the last two BOXES this morning."

Marks and Spencer has been contacted for comment.

Previously Screwfix had been selling out of face masks, with customers restricted to buying no more than one of the items at a time.

The Department of Health and Social Care revealed a total of 10,483 people have been tested as of 9am on Saturday, 10,460 came back negative and 23 positive.

Bristol City Council has issued fresh advise amid coronavirus fears, saying: "You can help yourself and others by:

  • Washing your hands frequently and using hand gel
  • Covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • Using a handkerchief or tissue and disposing of it carefully."
