Shopping fair with chance for donations

Hope Fair, a shopping opportunity with more than 100 artisans, entrepreneurs and designers, returns this year on March 15 from 9am-3pm at the Rembrandt Hotel on Sukhumvit 18.

Now in its fourth year, the Hope Fair has become an unavoidable event in Bangkok for customers in need of quality and uniqueness to meet wholesalers and retailers. The Hope Fair offers delicatessen foods, decoration, natural make-up, fashion accessories, kids’ costumes, games, clothes and much more.

This is also a chance for visitors to support small-scale enterprises who themselves donate to the Mercy Centre, an organisation helping the community of the slum of Klong Toey, including 3,000 kids in need. Moreover, donations are welcome during the fair: clothes, school materials and shoes for children or adults can be directly dropped off at the Mercy Centre booth.

Celebrating the landscape with an eye towards reforestation

For the eco-conscious, this is a not-to-bemissed event — the People & Forests Fair, which will be held on March 4 from 11am onwards at the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre.

Organised by the Centre for People and Forests and Big Trees Project, the event is now in its second year, featuring products and activities related to the local wisdom of people who live within or close to the forests. The theme is Forest Landscape Restoration, the concept of a reforestation in which everyone can take part regardless of their whereabouts in Thailand. The concept emphasises solutions to the damaged ecosystem and improvement of people’s livelihoods.

There will be an exhibition highlighting the importance of reforestation and examples of forest landscape restoration with communities being part of the support. There is also a Collaborative Art display featuring paintings of forests that reflect locals’ perspectives towards forest restoration.

There is also a seminar on the topic of forest restoration as a new hope for sustainable forest management with panels including social activists, economists, academics, landscape designers, locals and entrepreneurs who care for the environment. Forestry expert Somsak Sukwong is also participating in the seminar.

Among the event’s highlights is an activity called Forest Quilt, encouraging visitors to make a large quilt from leaves and pieces of wood. The finished product will be put on display later on.
