Shopping centre in Weston-super-Mare responds to claim of 'coronavirus outbreak'

A shopping centre has sought to reassure customers after a staff member tested positive for coronavirus.

Bristol Live received concerns from an anonymous reader, claiming that there had been a COVID-19 "outbreak" at the Sovereign Centre in Weston-super-Mare.

However, the retail centre in High Street has denied this and said only a single case of the virus had been identified among staff.

This was confirmed over the Christmas period and the shopping centre was deep-cleaned afterwards as a precaution, with colleagues sent home to self-isolate.

All of their tests came back negative, a spokesperson for Sovereign said, and no further cases have been reported.

A statement issued on behalf of the shopping centre said the person who tested positive was not customer-facing, and that they contracted the virus after a member of their household was also infected.

'The employee does not work in a public area'

It added: "The household isolated for 10 days, as per government guidelines.

"The individual affected does not work in a public area so only comes into contact with other staff, all of whom were sent home to self-isolate as contacts of a confirmed case.

"These individuals all tested negative for Covid-19."

While the national lockdown has forced the closure of all non-essential shops, there are several shops still open inside Sovereign as they are allowed under the government rules.

These include Wilko and Poundland, which have been exempt from closures as they sell essential items including healthcare products and food.

The statement said a "full clean was undertaken of the centre" as an added precaution.

It continued: "Public Health England has not been involved, as this is a single case contracted from outside of the Sovereign Centre."
