Shoppers will get free weekend parking in Ashfield town centres over Christmas

Shoppers and visitors to town centres in Ashfield will be able to enjoy free parking at weekends over the Christmas period.

Those planning on visiting Hucknall, Kirkby-in-Ashfield or Sutton-in-Ashfield from Saturday, December 7 until January will be able to park for free, following the success of a free parking scheme last December.

Ashfield District Council hopes the action will promote visitors to stay in the town's for longer and use its shops and services.

At a council Cabinet meeting this week, it was also agreed that two hours free parking would be offered to residents from May 2020 - adding to the existing one hour free parking currently on offer.

Theresa Hodgkinson, Director for Place and Communities said “This initiative is just part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to town centre regeneration.

"Our town centres have some great shops, both national brands and independents, and we want to make it as easy as possible for residents to shop on their local high street and enjoy the many cafés and places to eat.”

12 spaces at Sutton Market Place, 35 spaces at Piggins Croft, Hucknall and eight spaces on Hodgkinson Road, Kirkby will have specially marked bays offering two hours free parking by next summer.

Earlier this year 20 electric vehicle charging points were also installed across Ashfield as part of the 'Go Ultra Low' project led by Nottingham City Council, offering more places for eco-friendly drivers to recharge their cars.

Eight of these charging points are in the visitor’s car park of the Council Offices in Kirkby, a further eight in New Street car park, Sutton.

Theresa Hodgkinson added: “We are excited about the addition of the new electrical charge points introduced as part of the Council’s green agenda.

"We are hoping that we can encourage the use of green energy and sustainable living across our district."
