Shoppers to 'lose out on loyalty points' for buying alcohol under new clampdown

Shoppers will reportedly lose out on loyalty card points for buying booze as part of a Government clampdown on alcohol.

The proposed new measures are part of Health Minister Simon Harris' Public Health Alcohol Bill, which still needs approval from the EU.

As well as bringing in a minimum price for the sale of booze, the Government also wants to ban shops from using special offers to entice customers to buy drink at a discount.

They hope to have the changes in place by September 2020, the Irish Independent reports.

Shops nationwide use loyalty card and other reward schemes for customer purchases, which currently includes alcohol.

Mr Harris said: "Alcohol is not an ordinary grocery product.

"By restricting access to alcohol products through promotions or loyalty card programmes, the regulations align with the objectives of the Public Health (Alcohol) Act 2018, which are to reduce alcohol consumption and reduce the harms caused by the misuse of alcohol.

"Alcohol is a drug and one which has real risks and harms associated with it and as such, should not be a subject of promotional activity."
