Shoppers threaten to boycott Tesco after cash payments stopped at ‘scan as you shop’

Shoppers have threatened to boycott Tesco after it announced plans to stop cash payments on its ‘scan as you shop’ services.

Tesco offers the option to pay as you shop at its bigger stores by scanning items as they go around the shop.

But now Tesco customers will be forced to use card payments if they wish to use the service, according to the MEN.

The Sun reports the company has notified customers they’ll soon no longer be able to pay with coins or notes at the scan as you go payment area.

Tesco has been printing messages on receipts to customers and has confirmed the change will take place on January 13.

It reads: “Scan as you shop is changing.

“The scan as you shop payment area will only be accepting card.”

A shopper shared the news on Facebook (Facebook)

Shoppers flocked to social media to have their say, with one fuming: “Feels like people that pay cash are been [sic] punished for paying that way.

“I for one don’t like using my card unless I really, really have to.”

“Oh no why? When I do my big shop I always pay cash, always use scan as you shop too as it’s so much easier, I did it yesterday it was fine," a second wrote.

A third added: “Not everyone has a card.”

And a fourth said: “Well I’ll be stopping using Tesco’s weekly then.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: "90 per cent of our scan as you shop customers check-out using card payment.

"So to make it easier and faster for customers, the scan as you shop tills at most of our larger stores will take card payments only, from the 13th January."

Not every Tesco shopper was annoyed. One wrote: “You won’t need to unpack and reload.

“Instead of going through scan and shop and having to pay card, you can go through self scan and instead of scanning all your shopping scan the barcode on the screen like you would scan and shop and pay cash.

“You can also go to any checkout and pay cash - all they do is scan a barcode on their till and it comes up on their checkout with your scanned shopping.”

Scan as you shop is available in around 500 Tesco stores.
