Shoppers suddenly told to leave Morrisons store after chemical spill

Shoppers were forced to leave a Morrisons supermarket store this afternoon after a chemical spill.

People reported being told to suddenly leave the store in Penketh Road, Speke - part of The Speke Centre retail park.

One witness contacted the ECHO to tell how shoppers were told to quickly leave the shop, which was then closed as fire engines arrived on the scene.

Another said how a hazardous unit was also present.

Others said the Iceland store at the retail park had also been closed.

A spokeswoman for Morrison's said: "There's been a small spillage of chemicals from the adjoining dry cleaning store.

"This is in the process of being cleaned up and the store will reopen shortly."

On the Speke Past and Present Facebook group, people speculated about what may have happened at the store - with some suggesting it was an electrics fault and others correctly stating that it was a dry cleaning-related spillage.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue were also contacted for comment.
