Shoppers sad to see Wirral shoemarket close suddenly after more than 35 years

A Wirral shoemarket has closed its doors after more than 35 years of trading in Liscard, Wallasey.

The once-popular store on Seaview Road shut for good over the weekend.

A spokesperson for Shoemarket confirmed to the ECHO the closure and said the remaining stock had been moved over to their other Wirral shop in Birkenhead - which is now on the lower levels of the original Shoemarket in the town on Grange Road.

They said: "It was partly due to the pressures of the pandemic and also because trade has diminished over the years, especially with the internet it has become harder and harder for us.

"We would of course want to thank all our customers over the years, some have been very loyal. We will still be operating from our Birkenhead store will all the Wallasey stock moved over."

Some customers commented on Facebook about the closure, one said: "Didn't even know, was only in there a couple of weeks ago to get new slippers how sad."

Another said: "Ah no! Was needing to go there soon as well ...damn it!!"

A third added: "At one time we had a great choice of shoe shops in Liscard, now it's going to be a trial going shoe shopping with my awkward feet!"

While many online were sad to see it go some had already started speculating what they would like the building to become next.

One suggested it become a cinema, like it was originally when it opened in 1911 as the Liscard Electric Palace which continued into the 1950s.

Once it closed it became a Lennon's food store before it became Shoemarket.

Others called for a book shop or greengrocer and some suggested it had good space for a furniture shop.
