Shoppers react as police cordon blocks off walkway to the intu Broadmarsh shopping centre

Shoppers heading along Lister Gate this morning had to turn back as a police cordon was set up to block access to a large area of the street which gives access to the intu Broadmarsh shopping centre.

People were heading out into the city to enjoy the sunshine and to browse in shops - which have been able to open since the lifting of restrictions  - but were confronted with a line of blue and white police tape warning - "Police line, do not cross".

Nottingham City Council's Network Management issued an initial statement earlier this morning (June 25) revealing there was a police incident in a roadworks bulletin.

The location was pinpointed as at Lister Gate, and the police incident "the walkway from Collin Street access through the Broadmarsh to the Lister Gate entrance, Nottingham".

Pictures from the scene show a large part of Lister Gate, outside the Broadmarsh, has been cordoned off by police.

The cordon stretches across from Shoe Zone to Claire's Accessories.

Shopper Jamie Gates, 25, of Lenton, said: "It's quite a shock to see it cordoned off. I don't know what has happened but there's an alarm going off. People are having to turn back and can't get through. There always seems to be something going on with the Broadmarsh at the minute"

Ryan Mitchell, 30, of West Bridgford: "I've just been buying a few things and saw the cordon. It's a large part of the street really so you wonder what's happened. A lot of people have been trying to cut through".
