Shoppers praise 'much-needed' improvements that have started at Arnold Market

Shoppers in Arnold have welcomed new temporary stalls at the market as work to revitalise the area gets well underway.

It's all change for the market, as the old dilapidated stalls were demolished and temporary new stalls are now open to be traded from.

It's hoped the remaining stalls will be demolished by the end of July.

A range of new food, craft and local history stalls will be introduced in the market, alongside the current stalls.

People welcomed the start of revitalising the market which "plays such a huge role for people in the town".

Hayley Fisher, a 49-year-old shop worker, of Arnold, said: "I think it looks good already. The new stalls just give the place a bit of colour, which has already helped.

"Over Easter there were various events going on here which was nice to see. I think it's a real hub for the community which has struggled recently. So this could help. I look forward to the work continuing."

John Parks, 59, of Arnold, added: "It's much-needed work and good to see it underway. I think it will bring people back here. The introduction of supermarkets to the area has pulled people away from the market and High Street. This will hopefully help."

The market was converted from a former school  site in 1966, but has since fallen on harder times, with several empty pitches.

Jean O'Neill, 60, of Arnold, added: "I use the market as often as I can. I think it's sad how it's gone. People just don't come here. I like the look of the new stalls though, it will hopefully help and this summer is good timing to bring more people out and use it."

Gedling Borough Council bought the market last summer and has been working to improve its appearance, increasing the use for community events and activities and working with market traders to widen and increase the choice of goods and services available.

The market improvement has been boosted by a bid for £1.25 million of funding from the N2 Town Centre Fund - part of the Local Growth Fund from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership that supports town centre improvements.

The council has also made a bid for £5 million to improve the high street. The bid was made to the government’s Future High Street Fund and, if successful, will go towards improving the access to the town centre, improve the appearance of the high street and create a more vibrant centre.
