Shoppers crowded popular Ameyoko Shopping street in Taito Ward, Tokyo, on Sunday to purchase ingredients for New Year's feasts, including osechi Japanese traditional meals and hot pot.

About 400 shops in the street were selling seafood such as crab, tuna, shrimp and herring roe, as well as black soybeans and chicken, among other food. As shop staff on the street loudly called out, "Everything 1,000 yen" and "I will give you extra," customers bought food one after another.

According to an association of the street, 500,000 people visited on Sunday, exceeding by 50,000 the people recorded on the same day last year.

A 38-year-old homemaker from Adachi Ward, said, "I want to relax and eat hot pot with my family during the New Year vacation."
