Shoppers flock to Edinburgh charity shop to snap up Jimmy Choo and Mulberry in annual designer goods sale

A charity store has raked in a record £10,100 in just one day after canny shoppers flocked to snap up designer goods at its annual sale.

The Shelter shop in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge opened its 17th New Year sale on Friday, selling luxury brands donated by the public in recent months.

More than 100 people queued to get their hands on top names like Vivienne Westwood, Liberty and Mulberry, as well as rare books, games and records.

One of the first items off the shelves was a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos which sold for £80.

The most expensive item – an Art Nouveau book signed and illustrated by the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha – was purchased by the first customer through the door for £500.

Volunteers took in £5000 in the first two hours of the sale, before setting a record for a single day’s trading.

Ailene Young, Shelter’s head of retail for Scotland, said Friday’s takings had topped their previous best in 2018 by more than £2500.

She added: “This is the highest turnover day that the charity has for a shop in Scotland – it’s phenomenal.

“They were sitting at £9950 a few minutes before 5pm and, just as they were about to close the doors, last-minute sales took them over the £10,000 mark. The previous record was £7500 so it’s quite a big jump.”

All funds raised go towards Shelter Scotland’s work to help the homeless.
