Shoppers are convinced they've worked out why Marmite jars have flat sides

Whether you love it or hate it, there's no denying that Marmite is one of the most controversial food items out there.

It's divided the nation for years, and to this day nobody can decide on whether it's the best thing since sliced bread, or just downright vile.

And now the condiment is causing even more drama, after one Marmite-lover shared his genius hack for scraping the last bits out of the jar.

The hack was discovered by a man called John, who posted it on Twitter - much to the delight of Marmite lovers across the nation.

Sharing his handy tip on the social media platform, John said: "It took me years to realise that near-empty Marmite jars should be kept on their side so you can the last of it out more easily. That’s why the jar is flat is the sides."

Genius, John. Genius.

Since it was posted the tweet has been liked almost 19,000 times and has been shared by over 4,000 people, so it's safe to say that it's the talk of Twitter.

Responding to John's hack, one Marmite fan said: "Whaaaaaaaatttttt? How have I got to the age of *mumbles incoherently* without knowing this?"

"My mind is blown, how have I never known this?" wrote somebody else.

Adding to the hack, another savvy shopper said: "When it's nearly empty you put a bit of boiled water in, shake it up, then add to a stew or beans to give flavour. Obviously."

Not everyone agrees with John's  theory, though, as one skeptical tweeter wrote: "Don't want to be that guy but - they'll have little flats on (both) sides for much easier queuing on the conveyors at the Marmite factory."

"No. It's to provide a better grip for your hand as you throw the jar into the sea," said another critic.

Manchester Evening News has contacted Marmite for comment.
