Shopper's rant about rising cost of Asda's plastic bags doesn't quite get the response she hoped for

A shopper has taken to Facebook to rant about the price hike on plastic bags.

The plastic bag charge was first introduced back in 2015, where shoppers were charged 5p in the majority of shops for a single use carrier bag.

It was done to encourage people to reuse their bags and to try and reduce the amount of single-use plastic being produced.

Writing on Facebook, the unhappy shopper said: "Warning!!! Take your bags to Asda they gone up to 15p a bag shocking!!!"

At the time of publication, the post had received 2,000 reactions and more than 3,000 comments.

While some Facebook users were equally shocked at the price rise, the vast majority were on board with the scheme.

One shopper said: "What is shocking is that people are complaining about it. Get a grip"

Another said: "Good! About time they stopped selling them at all! How hard is it to take your own shopping bag, seriously, wise up!"

While another said: "The higher the price, the more the deterrent, which is EXACTLY the point. What’s shocking is that people are still buying plastic bags while the world is dying!!!"

And a fourth added: "It is for a bag for life and not your normal carrier bag. I was shocked but they said if it ever broke take it back and they will replace it"

Other users were quick to point out that bags for life are now 20p in some stores, including Morrisons.

On the Gov.uk website, the results of the charge are explained in detail: "The carrier bag charge has made a big difference. Since we introduced the scheme, the number of bags used has gone down by more than 80 percent in England.

"This means that more than nine billion fewer plastic bags have been used."
