Shopper left baffled after being asked for ID when trying to buy Tesco sausage

A shopped said he was "very surprised" when he was asked for ID when buying sausage from a Tesco store - as a tech mix-up had labelled the food as for over 18s only.

Fufu Fang, 30, said he was stopped at the till when he tried to buy saucisson sec, a dry-cured pork sausage popular in France, as the Daily Star reports.

Due to an IT blunder, the sausage was labelled as 'secateurs', which, as a bladed item, meant potential buyers must prove their age before purchase.

Fufu was completely bemused when he was asked to provide ID for the sausage, and said it was 'a shame' that common sense didn't prevail when he visited the shop in Fulbourn, near Cambridge.

Fufu said: "I was very surprised when I was asked if I was old enough to buy the sausage.

"I did a double-take and thought, 'I hope I've bought the right kind of sausage'.

"It was very odd, and the shop assistant had to call the manager over - he thought it was a joke and I thought it was a prank.

"I guess they thought the sausage was a bladed object so they needed to check my age."

Another shopper wrote a review of the product on Tesco's own website, saying: "Not secateurs."

The customer said it was "a shame" they had to produce an age-appropriate ID in order to buy the product.

They added: "Please note Tesco, these are not secateurs.

"Do not attempt to cut your roses with this product, you will fail."

A Tesco spokeswoman said: "It looks like there's been a bit of a mix-up here.

"We're working to resolve this so that customers of all ages can purchase this delicious saucisson."
