Shopper causes scene when told he wasn't welcome in supermarket

A shopper caused a scene when told he wasn’t welcome in a Motherwell supermarket.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard John Haley protested that he wasn’t planning to steal anything, but when he tried to show staff what he had in his bag, a bottle fell and smashed.

Haley, 40, of Woodside Walk, Hamilton, then hurled abusive comments at a female member of staff as he left.

Haley admitted threatening or abusive behaviour at Tesco in Windmillhill Street, Motherwell, on November 7.

He had taken exception when staff told him he was barred from the store.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Haley, who was living in Motherwell at the time, had taken drugs and couldn’t remember much about the incident.

The solicitor added: “He has cleaned up his act since.”

Haley, who has just completed a seven-month electronic tagging order, was tagged for another month. It means he’s confined to his home between 7pm and 7am each day.
