Shoplifter with drug problem warned she will face prison if she offends again

A shoplifter has been given a month to tackle a drug problem and stay out of trouble or do "cold turkey" in prison.

A judge gave the warning to a 34-year-old woman who was caught stealing three days after getting a suspended jail term.

Sitting at Nottingham Magistrates' Court, he adjourned the case against Lindsay Gregory until December 20.

The court was told drugs rehabilitation was ordered when she was in court on November 21.

But this had not begun before she stole from JD Sports on November 23.

Chris Saunders, mitigating, said: "Unfortunately she started to dabble in Class A drugs, thinking she could handle it. She couldn't.

"She went on a downward spiral. She went out of court on Thursday, goes to the probation service and makes an appointment.

"The first appointment is Wednesday of this week. She wants to do the order."

But she went out and stole clothing worth £240 from JD Sports in Clumber Street on Saturday.

Mr Saunders added: "She is annoyed with herself, to put it mildly."

District Judge Leo Pyle decided to sentence her on December 20. He banned her from entering any JD Sports store in Nottinghamshire until then.

He told Lindsay, of Birchfield Road, Arnold, to attend all probation appointments and commit no more offences.

The judge said: "If you don't, the reality is that you will be doing your cold turkey inside.

"Somewhere in there, there is some intelligence. Listen and do this otherwise I will pull the trapdoor." She admitted theft.

Joanne Reynolds, prosecuting, said the store manager was outside the shop with a police community support officer.

They were discussing another shoplifter when Lindsay ran past with stolen goods. She was later found hiding under a car.

Miss Reynolds added: "She said she had a crack cocaine habit and was going to steal items to buy drugs."

At the earlier hearing, Lindsay was handed an 18-week prison sentence, suspended for six months.
