Shoplifter clocked up 110th offence by stealing meat from Iceland

A shoplifter got a fresh reason to stay out of trouble when he clocked up his 110th crime of dishonesty.

Judge Leo Pyle imposed a 14-day prison sentence, suspended for six months, at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

Carl Powell, 33, pleaded guilty to stealing meat worth £32 from the Eastwood branch of the Iceland frozen food chain on May 1.

The judge told him: "I can't overlook your record in general, not least your record of recent appearances before the court."

Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, said Powell and another person entered the shop, picked up meat and left without paying.

The incident was caught on CCTV and Powell was identified by a police officer who checked the film.

Mr Jerath said Powell's criminal record shows 109 offences of dishonesty.

He was in court on April 4 and May 1 and was sent to prison on May 16 but has already been released.

"He is no stranger to the courts," added Mr Jerath.

Stephen Burdon, mitigating, said state benefits have now been arranged for Powell, of Musters Road, West Bridgford.

"He is receiving counselling because his sister died two years ago as this is something they have identified as a problem. It looks as though it may be stabilising for him," added Mr Burdon.

If Powell stays out of bother for six months, he will not be sent to prison.

He was excused paying £85 prosecution costs or government tax.
