Shopkeeper slaps nine NINE face masks signs on front door to keep maskless out

A shop owner has slapped nine warning signs on the front door to make sure customers keep on wearing face masks.

But the move has proved controversial, with one customers branding the shop the "most unwelcoming in the UK".

Maria Burke, who has run North Cave News in East Yorkshire for 40 years, says all she wants is to keep her elderly customers safe during the pandemic.

But shopper Andrew Allison, a so-called 'freedom campaigner', tweeted: "Is this the most unwelcoming shop in the UK?

"And they are willing to discriminate against the medically exempt. Welcome to the UK. There are times when I don't recognise my country."

He attached a photo of the door of the newsagent which is covered in nine official and homemade notices urging people to wear a mask and also has two baby's dummies attached, with a note saying: "If you want to argue and kick off please save your breath I've heard it all. But please feel free to take one of these."

The shopkeeper says her tough stance had led to continual abuse and she's even had had anti-mask customers throw things at her.

There are no longer any requirements to wear face masks in any situations, but guidelines state: "We recommend that members of the public continue to wear face coverings in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with people you don’t normally meet."

Ms Burke said she had not had a day off since the pandemic started and insists she is just trying to keep both her customers and staff safe.

"Honestly, if you'd heard what I have been called," she said. "We have put ourselves out and tried to keep open and ourselves safe and open for the locals, and we get criticisms like this. I am really upset."

Another member of staff, named only as Sandra, told Hull Live : "She hasn't had a day off since last February. When supermarkets couldn't get stuff, she was getting things for people to make sure they had what they needed. For somebody to say that...they obviously have an issue.

Ms Burke said she has received verbal abuse and had items from the shop thrown at her by passers-by who didn't like being challenged over their lack of a face covering.

"I've had people coming in and saying they can't wear one and then pulling one out of their pocket, or builders who claim they have asthma, and then pull their t-shirt over their faces, what's the difference? I have asthma and I wear one.

"I've had a guy saying he will get someone to come and get me because he didn't want to put a mask on, a woman said she was sending someone to rob me.

"I've had people throw stuff off the shelves, a bolt thrown at my door. It has been like this since the start of the pandemic.

"It is all passers-by who are going through the village, not the locals."

A member of staff at the shop said many of the worst offenders were people travelling through the area to reach holiday caravans when it was lockdown and they were meant to be staying at home.

Ms Burke added: "People come to us because they feel safe coming in here, this is a largely elderly population who shop here and we are just trying to keep them, ourselves and our staff safe.

"We need to keep looking after each other. It's selfishness otherwise, people might have someone vulnerable at home that they're protecting," she added.

However, Mr Allison was unrepentant about his viewpoint, adding: "It's no longer a legal requirement to wear masks, and as I alluded to in my tweet, the evidence that mask wearing is effective in reducing transmission is not there. She shouldn't treat potential customers as babies."
