Shopkeeper, 50, 'attacked at work' is taken to hospital

A 50-year-old shopkeeper was taken to hospital after he was reportedly attacked at work.

Emergency services were called to Prescot Road News, in Old Swan, at about 8am on Sunday morning after receiving reports of an assault.

Police said a shopkeeper working in the store was allegedly "punched by a man who entered the shop".

The victim needed to be taken to hospital after the attack, where his injuries were described as non-life threatening.

Officers said a man was charged in relation to the assault.

Jake McNeilis, 20, of Somerset Place, was charged with a Section 47 assault and theft from a shop.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "We have charged a man in connection with an incident in Old Swan on Sunday, 26 July.

"Shortly after 8am, officers were called to a newsagents on Prescot Road following reports a shopkeeper had been punched by a man that had entered the shop.

"The victim, a man in his 50s was taken to hospital for assessment of non-life threatening injuries.

"20-year-old Jake McNeilis of Somerset Place, Liverpool was arrested and has been charged with Section 47 assault and theft from a shop."
