Shop owner tells RTE's Claire Byrne she's hiding flakes under her bed as she gives date for 99 shortage

A Dublin ice-cream shop has said that the “worldwide shortage” of Cadbury chocolate flakes won’t affect them.

Getting a 99 ice cream cone this summer may be difficult after limited supply and increased demand has led to a scramble for the limited number of chocolate Flakes being produced by Cadbury.

Co-owner of Teddy’s Ice Cream in Dublin, Yasmin Khan, went on air with RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne show to discuss the predicament.

Mondelez, the company that owns Cadbury warned Teddy’s Ice Cream of the impending Flake shortage in April.

Since then, Khan said she has been stockpiling Flakes for Teddy’s 99 cones, “I even have them hidden under my bed", she said.

Khan explains her theory that Cadbury assumed that ice cream shops wouldn’t be allowed to open for business during Covid-19 restrictions but “because they were deemed essential for mental health, we’ve all been selling a lot of ice cream.”

She gave a gloomy prediction saying that “by mid-July it will be tough to get 99s.”

Khan said the classic 99 ice cream cone with a Cadbury’s chocolate Flake is their top seller.

She told the RTE Radio One show: “There are other companies that make flakes but they’re not the same… Irish people love Cadbury.”

After barring us from beer gardens and denying our holidays abroad, is the simple 99 ice cream cone the next summer staple the pandemic will take from us?
