A shop assistant is “overwhelmed” at the praise he has received after an image of him helping a partially-sighted elderly lady walk around a store went viral.
Shopper Toni Gibbs captured the heart-warming moment on her mobile phone after spotting the store worker helping the lady in a British Home Store (BHS) branch in south-east London.
Posting it on her Facebook page, Mrs Gibbs wrote: “Dear BHS. While in you store at Bexleyheath I came across a very helpful young man (I didn’t get his name) helping a little old lady and it melted it my heart, this young lad is a credit to your store and we need more like this… Merry Christmas.”
The post soon went viral after being shared over 2,000 times and the shop assistant was identified as 28-year-old Sam Warren from Welling, who has worked at the store for six years. Responding to Mrs Gibbs’s post, Mr Warren said: “I’m quite overwhelmed. Merry Christmas to you too”.
Speaking to ITV News, Mr Warren added: "I saw the elderly customer struggling on the first floor and went over to help. She had trouble walking and it seemed her vision wasn't great so I helped her to the lift. When we got downstairs I rang her a cab and waited until it arrived.
"I don't what to make of it all really. I was just doing my job."
Store Manager Sophie Cassat said: "I'm so very proud of Sam but it's no surprise. He was just doing his job but Sam has got that extra special touch with his customers
