Shootings, stabbings and ASBO teens: What life in West Denton is like, according to residents

With recent reports of shootings, stabbings and antisocial behaviour, West Denton is no stranger to crime.

Residents say they have been terrorised by teens and police have issued eviction warnings to parents if their children’s bad behaviour continues.

We speak to the residents of West Denton to see what it's really like to live there:

One resident who feels strongly that something needs to be done is Zara St Clair.

(Newcastle Chronicle)

Zara grew up in the area is known to locals as 'D Road'.

The 46-year-old grandmother said: "The crime and anti-social behaviour is beyond a joke now kids are out of control and we don't see any foot patrol in the area.

"All the flats beside us windows [were] smashed in, kids setting fire to bins and antagonising our elderly neighbours.

"In these block of flats, we had drugs dealers living there. I could stand in my kitchen making a coffee and watch the drug dealers unfold. After six years we did eventually get them moved."

Zara now runs a group on Facebook, Chapel, Denton and Westerhope Residents, where locals can post about events and support one another in the hope of combating the anti-social behaviour in their community.

Charlotte Wilson, who grew up in the area, is now bringing up her family there and fears teenagers' behaviour causes danger for her young ones.

The 30-year-old mum of three said: "I don't mind living around here. There are small gangs going around but if you keep yourself to yourself you are ok.

"It's awful around here, there is so much smashed glass around here and having three kids who try to pick it up it's just really dangerous."

Another resident who follows the same view to 'keep yourself to yourself' is Ethel Redhead, who moved into the area last year.

The 72-year-old, who lives in a block of high rise flats, said: "I've had no bother where I am but it seems like there is a lot of crime and kids causing trouble around the D roads.

"My son lives along there and he has had no bother as he just keeps himself to himself and stays out of people's business."

Another resident who has not experienced any problems is Nick Minto, who has grown up in the community.

The 29-year-old said: "I think it depends on what area you live in, to be honest. I think we live in the better part.

"It's a nice place to live with a tight community. It seems there are certain parts [that] have a lot of antisocial behaviour with young people terrorising residents it's so disapointing."
