Shooting in Rusholme was linked to earlier 'altercation' say police

Investigations were continuing today after a gun was fired in Rusholme last night.

Police confirmed to the Manchester Evening News the incident was being linked to an earlier 'altercation' at the same location involving a group of people.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

Greater Manchester Police said no arrests have been made as yet and investigations were continuing.

Police said officers were called to 'reports of a firearms discharge' at 7.20pm on Friday at the junction of Great Western Street and Ossory Street.

Earlier on Friday, at 5.30pm, the disturbance was reported.

Police closed off a stretch of the route through Rusholme for forensic investigations last night.

Photographs from Great Western Street show an evidence marker next to what appears to be a bullet casing on the road.

Armed officers were reportedly at the scene earlier.

Forensic investigators in white suits were pictured as a cordon was established near to a closed row of shops.

Police said they believe there is no threat to the wider public.

An appeal for witnesses was issued today.

In a statement today, Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 7.20pm on Friday, police were called to reports of a firearms discharge on the junction where Great Western Street meets Ossory Street in Manchester.

"Emergency services attended and no injuries have been reported.

"Earlier in the day at around 5.30pm, police were called to reports of an altercation between a group of people on Great Western Street.

"The group dispersed prior to police arrival.

Police have issued an appeal for information (ASP)

"Police are treating the incidents as linked and believe there is no wider threat to the public.

"No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing.

"A scene remains in place on Great Western Street and the road is currently closed."

The force appealed for anyone with information to call 0161 856 4409 quoting incident number 2623 of 19/03/21, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
