Two people are dead following a shooting at New Hampshire State Hospital, a psychiatric facility, in Concord.

Officials responded to an active shooter situation at the scene at around 3.38pm. Upon entering the lobby, the suspect shot one individual, Col Mark Hall, the director of the Division of State Police, said during a news conference.

A state trooper immediately engaged, shot, and killed the suspect. The shooting was contained to the front lobby.

The victim was administered CPR on site and was transported to the Concord Hospital. However, they succumbed to their injuries. Col Hall did not provide identifying information for the shooter or the victim, adding that officials were working to notify next of kin.

All of the hospital’s patients are safe, he said, adding that there is no current threat to the public. Employees were evacuated as the situation unfolded.

The hospital serves over 100 patients.

At around 4.45pm, the New Hampshire Department of Homeland Security and Management said the situation had been contained. The scene remained active while officials continued investigating a suspicious vehicle, which was being worked by a bomb squad.

Aerial images of the hospital showed a large number of police responding to the incident.

The facility is the state’s “premier” psychiatric facility, the state’s Department of Health and Human Services website says. Concord, the state capital, is 120 miles southwest of Lewiston, Maine, where 18 people were killed and 13 others were injured in shootings last month.

In a statement posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, New Hampshire Republican Governor Chris Sununu said the facility had been cleared.

“The state immediately mobilized, and first responders and law enforcement are on the scene. We will provide as many details as possible as this situation unfolds,” he said.
