Shooter Hoberg sets record before Tokyo

Tokyo-bound rifle shooter Alex Hoberg has produced a record-breaking display in his final competition before the Olympics.

Hoberg, aged 19, won the 10m air rifle event in Adelaide by equalling the world-record mark of 252.8 points set by China's Haonan Yu in 2019.

Hoberg bettered the Australian record of 252, set by Tokyo Olympics teammate Jack Rossiter in April.

The performance at the Wingfield Grand Prix will not be recognised as a world record because the young gun was not competing at an International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) event.

Trap shooters have delivered the majority of Australia's Olympic medals in shooting; Warren Potent remains the nation's only Olympic rifle medallist after winning bronze at Beijing 2008.

But Hoberg is one of several Australian rifle shooters to have struck promising form in the lead up to the Tokyo Games.

Australia's 15-strong shooting team will start a 14-day camp in south-east Queensland next Sunday, entering a biosecurity bubble that will have similar protocols to what they face in Tokyo.
