Shola Ameobi has high hopes for Newcastle United and Andy Carroll this season

Shola Ameobi believes that Newcastle United can enjoy a successful campaign this season after some exciting additions during the summer transfer market.

The Magpies smashed their club-record transfer fee for the second time in the last two windows to draft Joelinton in from Hoffenheim, while they also signed Allan Saint-Maximin, Jetro Willems, Emil Krafth and Andy Carroll.

The latter, signed on a free transfer following his release from West Ham back in June, returns to Tyneside eight years after leaving for Liverpool, with the last few seasons being marred by injury problems.

While Carroll faces a battle to get back to fitness, with his second debut for Newcastle being delayed, Ameobi has praised the club for bringing the 30-year-old back to St James' Park.

“I think they will be high, the five incoming players and excitement has built over the summer off the back of the old manager leaving and Steve Bruce coming in,” he told Sky Sports.

“You can look at the signings we’ve made as a club and be really excited about what this season holds. Fans should be excited about Carroll. He’s a local boy coming home and we all know what he can do, the effect he had previously.

“A fit Andy Carroll, there’s tremendous up sight there about what he can bring to the club.

“He’s excited, he mentioned to me before how excited he was and also how nervous he was coming back into the stadium.

“That’s something for us to look forward to come September.”
