Shola Ameobi calls for Newcastle United to invest in attackers ahead of new season

Former Newcastle United star Shola Ameobi has urged the Magpies to focus on bolstering their attacking line ahead of the final four weeks of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies have seen Salomon Rondon return to West Brom after a season on loan at St. James' Park, with the Venezuela international expected to move to join Rafael Benitez in China.

Ayoze Perez has also moved on, joining Leicester City in a deal worth around £30m, leaving central defender Fabian Schar as the highest remaining scorer in the Premier League with a tally of four goals.

A turbulent summer so far has seen Newcastle sorting issues off the field but the appointment of Steve Bruce as Benitez's successor on Tyneside should lead to more stability in the coming weeks.

The Magpies are yet to dip into the transfer market to sign new faces and Ameobi has urged the club to ensure they do not neglect the forward areas of their side, with Rondon and Perez combining for 23 out of Newcastle's 42 Premier League goals last term.

“Ultimately, they were our goals last year and we all know, especially in the Premier League, goalscorers come at a premium. I know Steve will be coming in, that will be his priority," he said.

“In terms of the squad, we’ve got a decent squad and that is the void we need to fill straight away. It’s very hard to make signings without a manager and ultimately, the manager has to make those decisions.

“Hopefully Steve will be coming in knowing what he needs to do. Whether or not we can get that over the line is another question because the time frame is very short.

“He has got all the experience in the world, he’s been doing this a long time and he’s got broad shoulders. I think he’ll be able to cope with the demands of this job.”
