Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Wednesday held talks with Libyan National Army (LNA) commander Khalifa Haftar on resolving the conflict in Libya.
The unannounced talks were held behind closed doors in Moscow.
Shoigu and Haftar discussed the situation in Libya and "the important role of talks" held in Moscow on January 13 as well as "the need to fulfill" terms agreed at the Berlin conference later last month, the Russian defense ministry said in a statement.
Haftar and Shoigu "once more noted the lack of an alternative to political ways of resolving the intra-Libyan crisis" and their commitment to Libya's "independence, unity and territorial integrity," said the statement.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Shoigu held meetings with their Italian counterparts on Tuesday.
After the talks, Lavrov said a new naval and air mission that the European Union will launch in the eastern Mediterranean to stop more weapons reaching the warring factions in Libya should receive the green light of the United Nations Security Council.
He warned that no steps should be taken without the Council’s approval.
