Shocking Welsh rugby derby brawl sees three players banned for total of 12 weeks and clubs fined

Welsh rugby bosses have issued three player bans and fines to two clubs after a shocking brawl broke out in a local derby between Cambrian Welfare RFC and Treorchy.

Four players had been red-carded during the Division One East Central clash on January 18: video footage shows fists and boots flying in the second-half melee.

The local derby between the clubs just four miles apart from each other in the Rhondda ended with a 16-10 win to Treorchy.

WRU disciplinary bosses have now convened this week and issued bans to three players and fines to both clubs.

Three players in total have been issued with bans: two from Cambrian, with a three-week and six-week ban respectively, while one Treorchy player has been given a three-week ban.

A spokesperson for the Welsh Rugby Union said: "Having considered the evidence in its totality, the WRU disciplinary panel was satisfied that the behaviour exhibited by both teams amounted to a breach of the WRU Code of Conduct for Players.

"Three players were suspended following the red cards issued by the match official totalling 12 weeks.

"The panel determined to impose a fine on both clubs of £500, in which £250 is payable to the WRU, and the residual £250 suspended for a period of 12 months."
