Shocking video shows 'idiot' drivers mount pavement of closed road

Drivers have been caught on film hurtling down the pavements of a closed residential road.

Browns Lane in Netherton was closed this morning (Monday) to allow roadworks to go ahead.

Footage shows drivers heading straight past the diversion by using the pavement.

Semi-detached houses and other properties can be seen either side of the road.

The man who filmed the video wishes to remain anonymous but he said: "Idiots. It's a good job the school - within 100 yards of this - is closed.

"These weren't the only two to do this either, a good few people have chosen to drive down the pavements today."

He tweeted Sefton Council , who responded to say they were working with contractors to ensure a better fitting closure is put in place.

A spokesman for the local authority said: "Contractors  have been advised to extend the closure of Browns Lane, Netherton to incorporate part of the footpath.

"We are aware of motorists illegally mounting the footpath at speed and would advise residents who witness this reckless and dangerous behaviour to contact Merseyside Police ."

St Oswald Labour councillor Carla Thomas has also slammed the reckless motorists.

She said: "It is shocking to see such blatant disregard for the rules of the road, which exist to keep us all safe.

"The driver's dangerous behaviour could've had potentially devastating consequences not only for themselves but all other road users and pedestrians.

"A child, older person, disabled person or even a mother with a buggy could have appeared at any moment."

It is an offence to drive along a footway according to the Highways Act 1835.

Rule 145 of the Highway Code also states: “You must not drive on or over a pavement, footpath or bridleway except to gain lawful access to property, or in the case of an emergency.”

Merseyside Police have been approached for comment.
