Shocking video shows extent of flooding on Edinburgh railway – and why trains are still off

A shocking video has highlighted the extent of the severe flooding on railway lines near Edinburgh.

Network Rail posted footage from the Winchburgh tunnel where the drainage was overwhelmed by yesterday's heavy showers.

They say that 60 per cent of August's total expected rainfall arrived in just a few hours in some areas.

Trains between Edinburgh and Glasgow were all cancelled as a result, and services are still not running this evening with no plans to reintroduce them at all today (Thursday).

Network Rail took to social media earlier today to say they were working hard to clear the flood waters and get trains running again. Water was being pumped out of the 330 metre long tunnel this afternoon.

ScotRail say that many Edinburgh services heading west will be departing from Linlithgow as a result of the flood.

Flash floods arrived in parts of Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife yesterday, and yet more is expected on Friday and over the weekend.

A yellow weather warning has been put in place for the next three days, with further downpours and thunderstorms predicted.
