Shocking video shows carnage left behind from two major Ayrshire landslides

A shocking video has shown the destruction left behind from two major landslides in Ayrshire.

'Thousands of tonnes of debris' were left over a 50m stretch of train tracks after the 'significant' landslips between Ardrossan and Largs at the weekend.

Specialists have been on the scene since Saturday tackling the carnage after the incident broke out near Fairlie and West Kilbride.

The video shows how the railway tracks have been buried under mountains of dirt leaving earthworks and drainage leaving engineers to assess the damage.

The footage shows the signalling cable and the troughing collapsed on the ground amongst the wreckage.

Network Rail Scotland said: "We’re dealing with two significant landslips between Ardrossan and Largs.

"Our teams are assessing the damage at both sites now. We don’t have an estimate for the line to reopen at the moment.

"Specialist earthworks, drainage and overhead power engineers are on-site continuing to assess the damage caused by landslips near Fairlie and West Kilbride.

"At Fairlie, thousands of tonnes of debris has been deposited over a 50m stretch of track.

"With the hillside above the line still moving in places, we will need to continue to monitor the ground conditions before repair works can commence.

"Our engineers will be working around-the-clock over the coming days to make plans for the recovery of the line.

"This is the other landslip we're dealing with, between Ardrossan and West Kilbride. You can see the signalling cable and the troughing which normally holds it suspended in the air.

"We'll be speaking to the team who'll reopen the railway again at lunchtime for an update."
