Shocking state vandals left Sefton Park in after Bonfire Night

This is the shocking state that Sefton Park was left in after vandals covered an area of it in tyre markings and left litter after Bonfire Night celebrations.

People living nearby, volunteers from the Friends of Sefton Park group and the Penny Lane Wombles collected bags of used fireworks and empty beer bottles and cans from the Green Flag-awarded site today, November 6, after the vandals struck last night.

Group chairman Andrea Ku said: "Every year there seems to be more and more firework sales, and less and less public displays. People want to celebrate and we don't mind them doing it in the park, because not everybody has a garden. But the more people do it, the larger percentage we have of people who just refuse to pick up after themselves.

"The fireworks were mostly left around the car parks. The area that was worst hit was the review field right by the car park. It looks like people have just parked, set the fireworks off, and left.

"There was a lot of litter by the Livingstone Drive entrance, and that's where a car has come in and skidded doughnuts all around and caused a big mess.

Drone footage of the park captured the extent of the damage, which could take weeks to repair.

Andrea said: "You occasionally see people driving in the summer, but because it's dry, it doesn't churn up all the grass the way it did last night. Luckily the grass is quite resilient and it will grow back. It just doesn't look nice when people walk through the park and see that.

"Sefton Park has visitors from all over. We have great volunteers that carry out litter picks because they love the park. We even get international visitors, and they are seeing this, it paints a very negative picture of our community."
