Shocking scale of wildfires near Bordeaux shown in aerial footage

Aerial footage shows the extent of the raging wildfires burning outside of Bordeaux, which have prompted the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.

The wildfires, which broke out last week near the Atlantic coast, are now 15km (9 miles) from Bordeaux, the city’s mayor Thomas Cazenave said on Sunday (26 July).

Footage shows plumes of thick grey smoke rising from the countryside in Landes, which borders the department of Gironde, where Bordeaux is situated.

Around 55,000 people were ordered to leave villages around the city over the weekend. Officials have said they are considering the total evacuation of Bordeaux if necessary.

Authorities have warned that they could be fighting blazes near Bordeaux, the sixth largest city in France, for “several weeks or even several months”.
