Shocking pictures show Glasgow drivers out in force on Bank Holiday despite lockdown

Shocking pictures show Scots were taking to the roads in big numbers during yesterday's bank holiday, in spite of pleas from Government and police to stay at home amid the coronavirus lockdown.

Photographs taken at the same time, at the same spot, four weeks apart showed an explosion in traffic on the M74 at Tradeston near Glasgow city centre.

The same stretch of the motorway at the same time a month ago had far less traffic. (Handout)

On Thursday, Nicola Sturgeon extended the lockdown for a further three weeks, saying that lifting any  restrictions  right now would be "very, very risky indeed."

The next time the lockdown will be reviewed will be May 28, and while the First Minister recognises progress that's been made so far in Scotland, she felt keeping the current measures in place was necessary.

And, as the number of people to die from the virus in Scotland hit 1,811, she said: "Some people will be out for perfectly legitimate reasons."

But she warned the public not to become "impatient" and added: "It is really important to remind people why we are asking you to live your life under these restrictions."
