Shocking pictures show fire-ravaged building after blaze near the Stadium of Light

The fire service has released a number of shocking pictures showing the damage caused by a fire in a derelict building near the Stadium of Light.

Emergency services were called to Millennium Way in Sunderland at around 4.20pm on Monday (November 30), after reports of a fire.

Crews from Sunderland Central and Marley Park tackled the blaze at the derelict building and used two jets, two breathing apparatus, ladders and a thermal image camera during the incident.

After around an hour, the fire was extinguished at 5.15pm and the crews left the scene.

The fire service said the building was "severely damaged" by both fire and smoke but said the cause of the fire is unknown.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire was a derelict single-storey building. Two crews from Sunderland Central and one from Marley Park attended.

"The building was 100% severely damaged by fire and smoke. Firefighters used 2️ jets, 2️ breathing apparatus, the triple extension ladder, the thermal image camera and small gear to tackle the fire.

"Cause of the blaze unknown. Crews arrived at 4.23pm and left at 5.15pm on Monday 30 November."
