Shocking moment girl, five, is saved after her father jumped onto train tracks while holding her in New York

This is the moment a five-year-old girl was saved by bystanders after her father jumped onto train tracks with her in his arms.

Mobile phone footage captured the shock rescue as bystanders rushed to pull the little girl from under a New York subway carriage.

Police said Fernando Balbuena-Flores, 45, leapt onto the tracks just before 8am on Monday and was killed by an oncoming train.

He had been holding his daughter, who miraculously survived.

The incident happened during the busy morning rush hour, with commuters lining the platform.

Witnesses said Mr Balbuena-Flores was calmly speaking on the phone moments before the fatal jump.

One woman told local broadcaster WABC: "I heard him telling the wife: 'You look out for the other two kids, I'm gonna take her to school.' And then he said: 'I love you.'"

Video footage taken in the aftermath of the tragedy shows how two onlookers leapt down and helped pull the little girl to safety as she clambered out from under the train.

The little girl was taken to a nearby hospital and later reunited with her mother (ABC)

She was then taken to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries, according to ABC.

Niurka Caraballo, who identified herself as the child's mother, thanked her daughter’s saviours for helping her daughter.

She told WABC: "Thank you for being there, thank you for having my back. Thank you to the 52nd precinct.

"The child is in perfect condition, thank you to God and the angels who took care of her.

“Everything is fine, except the absence of my husband. Thank you."
