Footage shows the shocking moment a driver reverses down the motorway to get out of traffic.
The M62 westbound saw bumper-to-bumper traffic this morning after a serious incident and drivers were stuck for "several hours".
One driver filmed the astonishing moment a car began to reverse down the hard shoulder in an attempt to get out of the traffic.
The silver Toyota can be seen slowly reversing down the hard shoulder, alongside massive standstill queues, the Liverpool Echo reports.
One driver was furious at the actions of one who was reserving during gridlock traffic.
David Carlyon, who filmed the incident, said: "Some drivers make sick.
"Stuck in traffic on the M6/M62 slip road due to an accident and p***** won't wait and endanger other drivers by trying to get back on the M6."
Part of the motorway between junction 9 and 8 was shut from 7am as North West Motorway Police lead the response.
Highways England tweeted: "All traffic within the closure has now been released.
"The carriagway will remain closed for several hours for @NWmwaypolice investigation work. Please see enclosed link for diversion."
The most recent update is that the M62 is still shut up between junction 22 and junction 23.
It is estimated there is five miles of congestion and 75-90 minute delays on the approach.
