Shocking moment driver, 20, seen 'flying' over bridge before killing grandad

Shocking CCTV footage shows the moment an unqualified driver lost control of a stolen car before “flying” over a bridge and killing a pedestrian.

Raihan Ahmed, 20, was driving 53mph in a 20mph zone across a bridge in Birmingham’s Digbeth district on August 29.

The stolen car's wheels at one point left the ground before landing on the other side of the bridge, smashing into 61-year-old former bus driver and father-of-four Ghulam Nabi, who died of his injuries.

Police have released the CCTV video clips, which show Ahmed fleeing the scene at high speed before abandoning the car, BirminghamLive reports.

Ahmed, of Great Barr, was arrested just 12 hours later following a successful appeal by the police and jailed for three-years and eight months.

He has been banned from driving for four years and ten months.

The family of the victim, Mr Nabi, agreed for police to release the footage to warn drivers over the dangers of speeding.

West Midlands Police detective Paul Hughes, of the force's serious collision investigation unit said, “Mr Nabi was a totally innocent party in this matter and, as a pedestrian, should have been afforded safety on the pavement.

"Ahmed was driving at such a speed on a public road and, in a specifically restricted speed limit, that the loss of control on the bridge resulted in all four wheels leaving the road.

“It's always a difficult decision to release footage from such tragic cases - however this is some of the worse driving I have seen in a long time.

“By releasing footage, with the support of Mr Nabi’s family, I hope it will make people think again about the responsibility they carry when driving. A split second decision can mean the difference between life or death.”
