Crowds cheer as huge firework is aimed and fired at historic Liver Building

Shocking footage shows the moment crowds cheered as a huge firework is aimed and shot at the Liver Building.

Massive crowds gathered at the Pier Head on Friday evening to celebrate Liverpool winning the Premier League.

But later in the night, chaos broke out as some people began letting off fireworks and causing serious disorder in the area.

Shortly before 11pm, a fire broke out on the balcony of the Liver Building after reports of a firework hitting the front of the landmark.

Later in the evening, more video footage emerged on social media which appears to show a large firework being aimed and fired towards the building, over the heads of those in the crowd.

As the pyrotechnic hits the building, dozens of people cheer and clap towards the person who fired it.

Both Liverpool and Everton fans across the city have condemned the behaviour of those who seemingly targeted the listed building.

Many also took to social media to show that they disagreed with the scenes on the waterfront.

Twitter user @GaryBeggs_8 said: "I’m disgusted about the pier head today.

"There is no need for it.

"Last night I can understand at the stadium but today at the pier head it’s attracted the worse of our fan base."

OneTouchGoal also tweeted: "To everyone down at the Pier Head.

"The club, police and Klopp have asked you time and time again to celebrate at home.

"There's a global, deadly pandemic going on."

Danny Patterson added: "The Pier head crowds just need to go home. Just go home."

Police were given immediate new powers on Friday night to disperse the crowds who remained at the Pier Head.

As spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "A Section 34 Dispersal Order has been issued around the Liverpool City Centre under the ASB, Crime and Policing Act 2014 following large gatherings in the area this evening.

"The order will be in place until 28th June."

Inspector Uren says: "We know a lot of Liverpool fans want to celebrate their Premier League win, but there is a time and a place for this - and this weekend is neither.

"Tonight we have seen masses of people flock to the Pier Head area heightening the risk of spreading covid-19.

"We want you to have a good time, but only when that time is right so please continue following government guidelines.

"By no means should you completely ignore social distancing measures - we must act responsibly whatever the circumstance.

"Protect yourselves and each other.

"Please note, LFC Players will not be attending the Pier Head this evening."
