Shocking moment boy is swept into the sea by powerful wave as he cycles on Porthcawl beach

The RNLI has warned about the dangers of getting too close to the sea after a video circulated of a young boy being swept off his bike whilst cycling on the beach at Porthcawl.

The footage shows a man and a young boy cycling along the town's beach as waves get further and further up the shore.

After a few minutes one of the waves catches the boy, and he is knocked off his bicycle into the sea.

Thankfully, the man with him was able to grab hold of him before he was swept away, but the footage has prompted the RNLI to issue a warning.

A statement from Porthcawl RNLI said "We are aware of footage circulating locally on social media which shows a person swept off their bike whilst cycling on town beach.

"It is not safe to go onto town beach either side of high water when there is a large swell or during stormy weather - big waves can sweep you off your feet (or bike) and the backwash could sweep you out to sea.

"Please stay back, stay high, stay dry.

"If you live close enough to exercise on the coast based on the current lockdown restrictions please #BeCoastSafe "

  • Stay well back from stormy, wintry seas and cliff edges
